SPX 2009 is this weekend!

SPX 2009!!!

When & Where & Cost:

The show will run Saturday from 11am till 7pm and Sunday from noon until 6pm and takes place at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in lovely Bethesda, Maryland! One day passes are just $10 and a 2 day pass is only $15! Both can be bought at the door on the day of the show so no pre-purchase is needed.

About the Show:

SPX 2009 will be held the weekend of September 26 and 27, 2009 at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel & Conference Center in Bethesda, MD, just one mile outside the nation’s capital, Washington DC. In its fourteenth year SPX now serves as the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comic books and the discovery of new creative talent.

SPX will bring together over 400 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, distributors, and each other. SPX will be open to the public September 26th from 11am Saturday, and run through 7pm that evening. The celebration continues Sunday from noon to 6pm. In addition, expect great programming all weekend long for you to enjoy!

SPX 2009 marks the thirteenth annual presentation of The Ignatz Awards for outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse, recognizes outstanding work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an artform and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz is a festival prize, the first such of the United States comic book industry. Winners will be determined by ballot during SPX and presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony.

As with every year profits from SPX will go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, protecting the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals.

Who to Look for:

The easy answer is to take your time and make sure you check out all of the awesome talent on display. But there will be numerous “friends of the Dollar Bin” on hand so we especially recommend you seek out these fine folks: Dustin Harbin (creative director of Heroes Con and a fine cartoonist), Andy Runton (creator of Owly and the nicest man in comics), Rob Ullman (awesome artist and awesome guy), Ben Towle (a cartoonist, an educator and a hobo), Chris Schweizer (creator of Crogan’s Vengeance and the 2nd nicest guy in comics), Falynn Koch (adorable art and adorable girl), Carolyn & Joe from Curls Studio (awesomely multi-talented dynamic duo of fun), Pat Lewis (a super talented super guy), Adam Casey (the man, the beard, the legend) the DB’s very own Adam Daughhetee (hater of meat but lover of hugs) and many other talented folks we might not know yet.

Sneak Peek: NOLA from Boom Studios

Debuting this November Boom! Studios takes you on a savage trip down south with an epic journey of blood-thirsty revenge in a decimated land in NOLA.

Post-Katrina New Orleans comes alive this December when BOOM! Studios premieres NOLA. Writer/director Chris Gorak of the critically acclaimed Right At Your Door brings you NOLA, a relentless story about dead-cold vengeance in the face of losing everything.

After cheating death, Nola Thomas wakes up alone in a deserted New Orleans hospital. Bruised, broken, and badly burned, she emerges from the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina with one thing on her mind…revenge.

NOLA takes the revenge/crime story to a complex setting, amongst a national disaster, where crime, and poverty reached a fever pitch,” says Managing Editor Matt Gagnon.  “Combine one of the most culturally rich environments on the planet with a tragedy of biblical proportions, and a passionate anti-hero with a righteous mission and you get NOLA.”

NOLA is a four issue miniseries published by BOOM! Studios, written by Chris Gorak, scripted by Pierluigi Cothran with sensational interior art by red hot newcomer Damian Couceiro.
