Interview: Steve Niles Discusses the Stop Online Piracy Act
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 Filed in Discussions, Interview
Pretty soon the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)is going to be voted on. Adam didn’t really see what the big deal was. Don’t we all want to stop online piracy? Well, after looking a little more into it he realized that stopping piracy may not be what this Bill is about. To discuss the contents of the Bill a little further Adam brings in Steve Niles, proponent of the Creator Owned “movement” and 30 Days of Night.
Runtime 22 minutes 58 seconds

I have to admit that until a few weeks ago I was in the same boat Adam was in. Everywhere I went I kept hearing people talking about "censoring" the internet. But when I'd ask them what they meant the only thing they would say is "they're making it to were we can't get stuff online for free anymore, boo hoo." Being the somewhat intelligent person I am (and being a person who was taught as a child to pay for things) would think of this as no serious problem. After all, being a struggling artist I understand Steve's position on piracy. However, my friend Caleb sent me a link to a website about the bill itself and I read it and now I understand the problem (the real one not the "we can't steal stuff" argument). Like Steve said, it's attacking internet users under the mask of piracy protection. Even taking a picture of yourself in a Star Wars T-shirt is punishable under this law.
The SOPA law will cause the internet will be crippled. I don't mean the internet full of bootleggers and illegal downloaders, but the good one full of fan sites and amateur journalism. Online piracy does need to be stopped, but not like this.
You make a really good point, Mitch. I didn't even think about the t-shirt thing. That is mind blowing.
Slightly OT but you mentioned it at the end of this show so now I'm curious. What's going to be in the third Astro City show? I didn't realize or remember that you had another episode planned.
I thought I posted this comment response already...
We are going to do a DB group discussion on Astro City (if I can get the guys together.) Also, we may have a special guest speaker.
