Interview: Christopher Priest Part 1

This week on the Dollar Bin Adam, Terence, and Joel sit down for the first part of what turned out to be a three hour gloves off conversation with comics legend, Christopher Priest.  Never shy with his opinions, Priest shares tales of his introduction into comics, including his early years at Marvel and his work on Conan.  From there we transistion through a brief history on his time with DC, which leads us to this parts closer, a look at his work with Black Panther.

Good to see you on here Kevin! :)

Thanks for letting us know. There was a space in the file name which iTunes did not like. I've fixed it. That's the perils of posting shows at 2 AM.

Thanks, Big Dog!

And, yeah, iTunes can be a fickle bitch. I think the same thing happened with the Luke Cage/Minor-TEE podcast...but it didn't move me to come give a head's up like an interview with Priest.

Well blast! That is a fun show. It had a space in the name too. That is fix now also. I very much recommend everyone go back and get Comics with Minori-Tee Luke Cage!

Wow, I have to agree with Kevin, I too was underwhelmed with the Comics with Minori-Tee episode. I think we need to replace him with Ted Tarver and call it Comics with Minori-Ted. j/k Tee is awesome.

Great interview guys. Keep 'em coming. Inspired to go out and buy the first 4 issues of Priest's run on Black Panther.

February 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTed

The whole run is good Ted. There are two trades of the first 12 issues and they can be had for real cheap on Amazon.

Holy crap! That had to be one of the best comics interviews I've heard, not just here, but period! Doesn't hurt that the era of Spider-Man he was referring to was the one that hooked me as a kid! ;) And the crazy thing is that we're not even to the Quantum and Woody part yet!

Early favorite for interview and guest of the year IMHO!!! :)

Yeah, another great show guys, you've really been bringing your A game for these interviews recently. Looking forward to part 2.

Nick, it's been a few weeks and to be honest I was enjoying myself so much I don't remember if we talked about it but I think we did briefly. If not, I am sure he would come back for more as he seemed to enjoy himself.

That was excellent. You guys asked some great questions, he had a lot to say, and he really knows how to tell a story. Loved the stories about what Marvel was like back in the day. I'm eager to hear the rest of the interview.

I never read Priest's run on Black Panther but this interview definitely has me wanting to give it a try. For that matter I probably haven't read very much that Priest has written. I usually enjoy these kinds of interviews because they introduce me to writers and artists whose work I have not sampled before.

I would love to hear an interview with Jim Shooter. Good luck!

Excellent. Priest is one of my favorites, a great writer and, in my brief experience meeting him (good Lord, was that already half my life ago?), a genuinely nice guy. Haven't heard anything out of him in awhile, and I sure wish he'd return to comics.

Don't have time to give it a listen now, but I'll definitely save it for later.

Welcome to the website Thad. Let us know what you think of the interview Thad. And come back next week for part 2.

February 25, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterjoel

Wow, that was a fantastic interview! You guys really knocked it out of the park on that one! I could listen to Mr. Priest (Mr. Owsly?) talk all day. I can't wait to get to the Quantum & Woody goodness.

Hopefully you guys can track down Shooter. He's unbelievably fascinating to talk to and has been a true gentleman in my experiences with him.

Great interview. It seems clear to me though that although Priest has made his peace with his not being in comics anymore, I think he sure does miss it. Whatever mistakes he's made, relationship-wise, writing-wise, that have led him to not be in comics anymore is nothing less then sad. Its been a part of him since childhood. And although I've discovered through his website that he excels at many things, this one thing he excelled at for a long time is still a great part of him. And judging from this interview, a very valuable part of him that has been underrated and underestimated for some time.

I wish he was still writing regularly, but I'm still so very, VERY glad he's at peace. In the end, there is nothing greater than serving God.

He's got a great laugh too!!

February 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTy

It's an interesting interview, though I have heard much of what he's said before at his site, Digital Priest. Anyone who's enjoyed this interview might want to check his articles over there too, because he's got quite a lot of fascinating things to say.

February 27, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVersasovantare

i would say that about 50% was on his site in some way. The things on his site he talked about I thought he elaborated on them a lot. But his website does have A LOT of good stuff.
