Discussion: DC 52 Relaunch the Recap

Finally, the DC Comics 52 relaunch is over and we, as well as the sales figures (jab), can get back to normal.  Shawn and Adam discuss some final thoughts on month one of the relaunch including ups and downs as well as what they came away with.  Just perhaps a few guests will drop in for a say too.

I hate to be a sourpuss, but I have to agree with Brian on a lot of stuff. I didn't have high expectations with the relaunch so I'm not as disappointed as most people, but I am going to say that I no longer am a DC fan. Anyone who knows me will tell you how much of a fan I am of anything 90's (music, movies, etc.) but that era of comics is hard to stomach.

I keep telling people this but no one seems to believe me- if DC and Marvel really want to pull in new readers, they should try focusing on good story and art, not stunts like this, or killing off Spider Man. Plus, Geoff Johns sucks. The over abundance of superheroes in non-superhero books did ruin a lot. I guess my argument that comics is "more than superheroes" and "not only a kid's medium" is now a moot point.

The only book I'll keep buying (for now) is Swamp Thing, only because I'm interested in seeing where it goes.

I would also like to thank you guys, (Adam, Shawn, and the rest) for giving an honest review of the relaunch. Most comic podcasts/websites seem to blindly love or hate the relaunch unquestioningly without intelligent thought.

As a person who resoundingly does not read superhero comics, you guys' in depth decent into DC has been interesting in the way that a bystander can't quit looking at a car crash. Frankly, I'm grateful I wasn't involved but, wow, look at the carnage. I want to fully support Shawn's decision to back away from a company that abuses her sensibilities. That's a lot of the reason I can't bring myself to read these books either. Sure, the characters are interesting and I understand how people build an attachment for them but, seriously, how much until your intelligence is just too insulted? I know I'm a terrible snob about things like this, but there are so much better things in comics. And I know you guys know that and regularly report on that good stuff, I'm super looking forward to your SPX coverage. I just really wish more people would get to the point where they refuse to read lowest common denominator mainstream comics and are willing to shake them off and read something better. For example, in the midst of all this DC 52, one of the best comics I've ever read ever came out, Love and Rockets #4. I know it's easy to love a Batman or a Wolverine or whatever but a work of pure fantasy (especially violent sexual fantasy) will never be as strong and compelling as something created with actual human attributes.

Anyway, congratulations on you guys making it through that gauntlet of crap. Even though I'll never buy or read any of it, I listened to every one of your podcast reviews and was endlessly entertained. Keep up the good work, team.

I haven't bought or read a mainstream Marvel or DC comic in 4 or 5 years but so far I haven't made much of an impact. I am a candle in the wind.

I've been enjoying the relaunch overall. While I didn't read every book, of the ones I've read so far the standouts were:

Aquaman, Batman, Animal Man, Justice League, Swamp Thing (kinda)

I was really wanting to like Nightwing and Batgirl. Hopefully that will happen in the next couple of issues.
