Heather’s Favorite Limited Series Read in 2010

1. Thor the Mighty Avenger: This wasn’t planned as a limited series however Marvel decided to cancel it, therefore we only got eight issues of this gem.   This is my first foray into the Thor story and I really enjoyed it.  Roger Langridge’s storytelling combined with Chris Samnee’s art is a team I want to see again.  Lucky for me, Marvel has reteamed them for a Thor-Capt FCBD issue.

2.  Tiny Titans and Little Archie and his Gang: Aw, Yeah! Besides more penguins what could make Tiny Titans more adorable? The gang from Riverdale of course! A mix up at the dry cleaners brings us the best comics team up of 2010.  Who needs a big event crossover spanning more books that I can possibly keep up with? Not me! Give me the simplicity of this series any time.

3.  Cinderella: To Fabletown With Love: Cinderella’s a spy! Beautiful covers by Charlotte’s own Chrissie Zullo pulled me into this series, but a well written story kept me coming back.  Cinderella’s spy stories are well balanced with a B story of the sale of magic shoes gone wrong.  I am looking forward to the second run of this series with even more of Chrissie’s wonderful covers.

Upcoming Event with the Dollar Bin: Charlotte Minicon

On Saturday, January 22, you will find the Dollar Bin at the Charlotte Minicon in Charlotte, NC.  Held at the beautiful Palmer Building, the Minicon is a laid back way to kick off the 2011 convention season.  Admission is a bargain at just $3.

Several past Dollar Bin guests will be making an appearance including Jason Latour, Chris Brunner, Rich Barrett, and Chrissie Zullo.  This Dollar Bin contributor hopes to talk to Jason, Chris, and newest Heroes staff member, Rico Renzi about their collaboration on Loose Ends for Twelve Gauge and to Chrissie about her beautiful Cinderella covers.

Bridgit Scheide, creator of Kindle and Sketch Charlotte member, has yet to grace our show with her lovely presence, but this shall be remedied at the Minicon.  Bridgit is an artist you should get to know and we hope to be able to help you do just that.

I don’t know much about Chris Stevens, special guest to the Minicon, other than his HeroesCon 2010 auction piece of Captain America was stunning.  The Minicon will be an opportunity to get to know more about the artist behind that gorgeous piece of work.

Also appearing will be Dollar Bin contributor and monster fighter, J. Chris Campbell, former Heroes Creative Director and Diary Comics creator, Dustin Harbin, as well as other local favorites, Sanford Greene, Budd Root, and Andy Smith.

Comical Resolutions 2011

It’s still early January so it’s not too late for me to share my comic related resolutions for the coming year.

1.  Step outside of my comic reading comfort zone.  I admit it.  I have a comic type.  It involves cute animals and chick characters.  Thor the Mighty Avenger was my toe in the water stepping out of my type and Marvel responded by cancelling it.  (Yes, Ted, I’m still complaining about that.  Damn it, people, put down the Deadpool and read TMA.)  Thanks to the lending library of Brandon (Big Dog), I have read more comics outside by type, the Walking Dead for example.  However my purchases for 2010 stayed clearly within my comfort zone.  In 2011, I will make an effort to add different comics to my personal library.

2.  Write more reviews for the Dollar Bin.  I read a number of comics in 2010 that I really enjoyed and fully intended to review so I could share stories that I enjoyed.  Like Cragmore by Pat Lewis.  I will finish that review and post it along with others this year.

3.  Do more interviews.  I love talking to artists and writers.  Off the record, I have some truly ridiculous conversations with creative people.  I want to channel that into interviews.  Interviews get me interested in reading new comics which will be very helpful for resolution number one.

Shawn Says: Spotlight on New Releases January 05, 2011

In which Shawn looks at the New Releases and lets you know which books she is most excited about!

1) Who is Jake Ellis? #1

After this first issue I can say that this is a great crime thriller with a very unique and intelligent twist. In this issue we are introduced to Jon, a spy, and his friend who only he can see. I am left wondering “who is Jake Ellis”? Is he real? Is he a figment of Jon’s imagination. Nathan Edmundson is a very smart writer. He keeps getting better and better with each series he writes. The twist with this book really adds layers and depth making it more than just another action/adventure story. Tonci Zonjic’s art work well for this story. It is sketchy and moody. I am hooked on this book and I can’t wait for the next issue!

2) 27 #2

A 27-year-old guitar player has lost his ability to play and he will try most anything to get it back, including make a deal with an unseemly man. I really dug the first issue of this comic and I am curious where the story will go. The writer, Charles Soule, and the artist, Renzo Podesta, are new names for me. I don’t think I have read any other books that they have done. I am really glad that I gave this book a shot. It has an interesting story with solid artwork. I will definitely check out other work from these guys and I will keep reading 27.

3) House of Mystery #33

I haven’t talked about this book in a while so I thought it deserved a mention. House of Mystery is always a sold read. I have been very impressed with the quality of this book month in and month out. I love what they are doing with the characters and I love how they are furthering the plot. Matt Sturges, Luca Rossi and Jose Marzan, Jr. deserve way more praise than they get. They are all extremely talented and always entertain. An added bonus for this issue is the story with David Lloyd’s art! Very exciting stuff! Check out House of Mystery #33 if for no other reason than Lloyd’s amazing art.
