Shawn Says: Spotlight on New Releases October 20, 2010

In which Shawn looks at the New Releases and lets you know which books she is most excited about!

1) Vertigo Resurrected #1

Vertigo Resurrected is a 100-page collection of hard-to-find and never-before-reprinted stories along with Shoot. Shoot is a story written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Phil Jimenez and Andy Lanning and it was supposed to be in an issue of Hellblazer. It was shelved because it dealt with a school shooting and Columbine had just happened. Vertigo decided it would be in poor taste for them to publish it then but since enough time has passed they are allowing it to see the light of day. There are a lot of other stories by some talented creators. If you haven’t read many Vertigo books from the late 90s here is a perfect primer for you to be introduced to the glory that is Vertigo.

2) Pilot Season 7 Days From Hell #1

7 Days From Hell has a great premise and great art. It is written by Bryan Edward Hill and Rob Levin with art by Phil Noto and a cover by Brian Stelfreeze. This book is part of the Top Cow’s Pilot Season line where they put out the first issue of several titles and let readers vote on the one that continues to be published. This is the only Pilot Season book that I have read this year but I really hope this one wins so this story can continue. The basic premise is this, a guy dies but instead of going to Hell a demon makes a deal with him that he has seven days to kill a certain target. If he succeeds he gets a new target and seven more days. If he doesn’t then he goes to Hell. Visit the Top Cow website to vote!

3) Fables #99

The fight for Fabletown is almost upon us and events are set into motion. This is a great build up issue. I can’t wait for the big fight! I’m still not sure how they are going to take down Mister Dark but I know Fables #100 will be a must read issue.

4) Batman and Robin #15/Bruce Wayne: The Road Home Catwoman #1

While I don’t care about Bruce Wayne’s return, I love Frazer Irving’s art so I picked up Batman and Robin #15 and I enjoy Catwoman so I picked up Bruce Wayne: The Road Home Catwoman #1. I enjoyed both of these books regardless of my apathy towards all the Batman titles. Irving’s art made Batman and Robin #15 worth reading. I felt like I was missing a lot of the story but looking at the pretty pictures made it ok. Bruce Wayne: The Road Home Catwoman #1 read a lot like an issue of Gotham City Sirens. I just don’t think I am sold on Batman Inc. and the Return of Bruce Wayne. I just want to read fun Batman stories again. Maybe I will give Batman Streets of Gotham a shot.

5) X-Files 30 Days of Night #4

I really dug this issue. From the first page to the last page, this book was really creepy. I love the story Steve Niles and Adam Jones is telling and I love the moody art Tom Mandrake is creating. If you are a fan of X-Files of of 30 Days of Night, or of horror in general, you should give this book a shot. I have been enjoying the ride and I can’t wait for the next issue!

6) Sixth Gun #5

I can’t get over just how much I enjoy this book. It keeps getting better and better. It is a fast-paced, action-packed story. Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt keep delivering issue after issue. If you aren’t reading this book track down the issues right now! Or at the very least pick up the trade when it is released in December. You won’t regret it!
