Men on Women in Comics
Tuesday, March 23, 2010
This week the Dollar Bin crew gathered for the first time at Heroes & Dragons in Columbia, SC. Capping off the celebration of Women’s History Month they celebrate Women-in-Comics! I forgot to turn on one of the microphones. Can you guess which one?
Runtime: 1 hour 24 minutes 4 seconds

"Somebody will be gay... Somebody will get AIDS... Somebody will come back from the dead" LMAO! I like Judd Winick though. Green Arrow/Black Canary was nice with Cliff Chang.
Ted spoiling Invincible for Devin may be my vote for Moment of the Year 2010.
Yeah...that was definitely a dick move. But, any guilt I had disappeared as soon as everyone decided to label me "emo". Bastards.
This attests to the power of the Dollar Bin that the topic was women in comics, only 2 minutes was dedicated to Wonder Woman and the conversation STILL could run almost an hour and a half. Oh yeah I may be a nerd but gamers are almost the bottom of the nerd pyramid.
Joel, I cut an hour of "on topic" discussion from this show.
I kind of figured there were a lot of cuts. It's just awesome that ya'll don't even need Wonder Woman to make the show great.
There was a bunch more Wonder Woman as well as the other Wonder Broads.
Another strong show guys. I have to say, I half way agree with Ted, I've never seen Atom Eve as a strong woman character. I've always read her as a little needy and co-dependant, clearly a girl with some daddy issues. But, I see her much like you described Buffy. I think she is definately an interesting and developed character, just not what I would call a "strong woman".
Great show guys. It got me thinking about my perspective on some female comic book characters. This isn't my top 5.
Black Widow - I didn't hear any mention of the miniseries that Richard K. Morgan wrote, I really liked the first one by but didn't care too much for the second one: The Things They Say About Her. The second one had too much Daredevil and Nick Fury and not enough Black Widow.
What about Tara Chace from Queen & Country? OK, she's definitely got problems but she's worth considering for this discussion.
And how about Fallen Angel, Peter David's character? She started at DC and later moved to IDW, I think. I thought the DC run was great but I've only read the first trade of the post-DC series. I couldn't adjust to the shift in the art style. Still I think she's a good example of a strong female character.
I do like She-Hulk's book or at least I did enough to buy the first 4 trades. I really liked it when Juan Bobillo was drawing it. He really captured the something there with the way he drew her and the other characters.
No mention of Storm? Or did I miss it? I started to listen to the podacst a couple days ago and just finished it tonight so its possible that I'm forgetting something I heard. Oh, and I don't really keep up with current continuity. I'm thinking back to when she was the leader of the X-Men, had a Mohawk, back when the Morlocks were introduced.
Kilmarock, they mentioned Storm super briefly, mainly because they knew i'd go batshit if not. My favorite period was the same as yours, when she had the Mohawk and kicked Callisto's rotten ass. I also was a fan of Bobillo on She-Hulk, but too bad we were in the minority.
I think two great female that didn't get mentioned was Jenny Sparks from the Authority, and Jakita Wagner from Planetary (though we talked about her at length on our Planetary 2 parter).
Also, I wholeheartedly cosign Chad about Barda. She's one of my all-time faves.
Other chicks that got no mention:
Red Sonja
Ms. Marvel
Amanda Waller
Lois fucking Lane
I'm pretty sure we could do another show called "Better Halves" and just focus on superhero wives and girlfriends for 2 hours...
I figured we gave Storm as much talk as everyone else (except maybe Powergirl.) We mentioned that she was an awesome leader even without powers (did that make the cut? I cut about a half an hour. Maybe that was in the part when we were talking about Buffy characters).
I haven't read Queen and Country yet and I have a TPB of Fallen Angel, but haven't cracked it open yet.
Jakita is one we missed. I kept trying to think of non Marvel/DC women, but was having trouble off the top of my head.
We talked about Louis Lane. I think it was determined that outside of the old Girlfriend of Superman comics she was a non-issue.
The Wall. How could I forget Amanda Waller? Great, strong, no-nonsense, don't-give-me-that-bullshit-Batman Amanda Waller.
I thought we mentioned Lois Lane in passing. Don't think we went there for too long because everyone already knows her pretty well. Maybe it got cut.
Maybe I missed the Lois Lane part. My bad if so.
Amanda Waller definitely deserves a mention though. Especially since she's gonna get major heat from the Green Lantern movie, where she will be played by Angela Bassett. Pretty solid casting, though i think it'll be tough to surpass CCH Pounder's voiceover work from the Justice League cartoons.
Speaking of Green Lantern, we didn't mention Carol Feris. She's a pretty important character. She has a lot of personality. She's been powered and not powered and she's rather influential.
Devin nailed it...flawed characters make for interesting reading. It's just typical that women characters seem to always seem to have the same problems. The Wonder Woman example is perfect...that's why she can't keep a series going.
On the heels of the Pia Guerra interview I'm surprised no one mentioned the ENTIRE cast of Y, the Last Man and how they were portrayed...
Big Dog, we did. It got cut.
Here's my top 5...
1. Mary Jane (pre Quesada screw job)
2. Jean Grey
3. Scarlet (good call Brian)
4. Zatanna
5. Black Cat
