Interview: Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz Part 2

A few months back Adam, Joel, and Tee of the Dollar Bin got together for their first two guest skypephonerview.  Who were the lucky test subjects?  Why none other that former Editor in Chief of Marvel comics, Tom DeFalco and his comics life partner and artist extraordinaire, Ron Frenz.  Listen as they discuss dealing with the Direct Market, Spider-Girl, Thor, Thunderstrike, and how much Joel sucks.

That was a great episode guys! I nearly crashed my car laughing when you guys got pwned by Frenz. Good thing I was already parked when DeFalco ninja attacked you guys at the end.

You can feel better about the fact that you made them at least one sale, I was not aware the Spider-Man family stuff was collected in trade already, I'll definately be buying it soon. I jumped off when they cancelled Amazing, and got shorted on Spectacular #1, so I'm waiting for that trade too.

I love the whole MC2 line, it's got a similar feel to lots of indy superhero lines, since it's mostly one creative team doing whatever they want in a universe they created.

Great ending to a solid 1st episode! I really hate I missed sitting in on this. Frenz is pretty much THE Spider-Man artist for me. I cut my teeth on his Amazing run and have been a fan ever since.

Here's hoping we get both of them for the 2011 Heroes Con...I have a TON of books to get signed by them! :)

I did indeed get owned not only by Ron Frenz but by Mr. DeFalco as well and you know what, it was worth every second of it. Just think about that for a second, Ron Frenz was busting my chops, how awesome is that? When in life does a fanboy like me get to talk to the two guys who wrote and drew the Spider-man that brought them into comics? Their Spider-man was my Spider-man and it always will be.
I have enjoyed almost everything they've done. Whether it's Spider-man, Thor, Spider-Girl, Thunderstrike,or whatever I see either of their names on the book i'll pick it up.
Next time BigDog we'll get you in on the fun.
Oh, and one day I will make it to the East Coast and i'll settle up with Adam for pushing me under the bus to save his skinny butt and with Terence for letting me twist not so gently in the wind. Oh yes, their time will come........

Greatest comic industry interview of all time! For us Gen Y/Millennials who got into Marvel during the early 90s, we couldn't have asked for a better editor-in-chief. Tom DeFalco is the quintessential New York City major publication editor-in-chief! His era of Marvel will never be matched.

Poor business decisions on a corporate executive level ended what could have been an amazing decade for Marvel. DeFalco's respect for Marvel's history, his integrity, understanding of the comic industry, and endearing personality keep him untouchable compared to any EICs since he held the position. Ron Frenz was great to have, and funny as hell! These two deserve significant praise from Marvel and its fans.

Can't wait for DeFalco's book coming up! That type of insight is priceless from a guy who was right there in the middle of it all during such an important time for Marvel.

Thanks to the Dollar Bin team for the couple of hours of awesome!

Their run on Spider-Man was the run I grew up with. When I see Spider-Man in my mind it's Ron's version I see. It's been a year and if Adam will let me I'd like to have either or both of them back. Maybe we could have DeFalco on for a Captain America movie review or something, who knows? And thanks for the reminder to check up with DeFalco about that book. I would be VERY interested in reading it as well.
And just as a cheap plug check out the Christopher Priest or Marv Wolfman interviews we did if you love that period in comics.

I haven't listened to it since it was released but I remember enjoying this interview quite a bit.

I also would like to hear Joel interview them again. It seems like there's plenty of ground, both past and present, that you could go over without rehashing the previous interview.

I'm gonna consider that a request from the fans and bug Adam about interviewing them again.

If it's fan support on calling in an interview that you need, you've got my vote, and a few buddies of mine as well!

New to the site, but enjoying the audio files that you guys have. Good work with the Christopher Priest and Marv Wolfman interviews, I enjoyed them both.

The way you guys direct your interviews, you really get the most out of your guests, and they come across genuine while explaining significant details. It's a treat for fans to get very real conversations like that. Can't find much of anything at all on DeFalco's plans for his book, so a current interview with him (and you've got to bring Ron in too) would be awesome!

From one Hobgoblin fan to another, Joel work some magic and hopefully you guys get another interview!

P.S. Happy 4th of July!

I just heard back from Tom DeFalco and it is as I thought. He can't comment on the book he mentioned until it is completed. But the good news to take away is that he is still working on it.

July 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJo-El

Joel, just to clarify, so you're gonna hold off on interviewing them until the book is done or on the stands?

July 5, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkilmarock

Absolutely not. I am looking for a topic that will allow me to approach either Tom or Ron and get them to come back on. There seemed to be some interest by various people on that book project Tom said he was working on so I thought I would give an update on that.

Joel: Glad to hear it. Thank you.
