Great interview so far. I like the Chris Priest section (I found it hilarious) and I am really looking forward to them talking about Thor.
I've read a little bit by Tom DeFalco & Ron Frenz but nothing recently. Still I enjoyed the interview. It got a little confusing trying to follow DeFalco's story of the life and death of the Spider-Girl comic, but maybe that's because I've never read it.
I also enjoyed the bit at the end where you asked them about their memories of working for Christopher Priest/Jim Owlsley. That's the sort of dirt that you probably couldn't get out of a creator during a convention panel, although if it was all covered in an issue of Back Issue magazine then maybe that made them a little less reluctant to discuss it.
Thank you for posting this interview. I look forward to part 2.
I enjoyed the way they came across as more like brothers than co-workers. The needling of each other and finishing each others thoughts. Just wait til part two, if I remember correctly Ron busts my chops pretty good.
As far as Spider-Girl, it was a one-shot, then they gave him 10 issues, then 7 more, and then kept on adding 6 more and then 6 more and then 6 more after which it would be cancelled until they got to issue 60, then cancelled it at 100, then it ran 30 more, and then was cancelled and ran 4 more, and then it was cancelled and was moved online, and then cancelled and now who knows. Those first 100 issues of Spider-Girl is just old-fashioned Marvel-style action book. It was a better Spider-man book than the Spider-man books and everyone should go pick up the back issues.
Word is Spider-Girl is coming back again in the near future, but with a different team.
It just leaked that Frenz and DeFalco are doing a new Thunderstrike mini at Marvel.
Their work on Thunderstrike was some of the best stuff Marvel put out in the 90's.
I enjoyed this interview. I love Tom and Ron's work on Spider-Girl. It is the most consistent, fun and entertaining Spider-Book for the past 13 years.
Unfortunately, Marvel has decided to cancelled the book after it's most recent relaunch because they want the name "Spider-Girl" for another character.
Again I enjoyed this interview and I can't wait for Part 2.
How come one one mentioned I forgot to cut off the intro loop? Oh well. Part 2 to is up. Listen as I save myself from certain death by using Joel as leverage to pull myself out of the way of an on coming bus. Unfortunately I had to sacrifice Joel to do it.
Unfortunately my hairy butt, you pushed me in front of that bus and cheerfully waved.
Spider-girl was absolutely the best comic I ever read. The characters were amazing (pardon the pun), the stories were inspiring, and the art was fantastic. Thanks to Tom, Ron, Pat and others for such an excellent journey.
I honestly think that if Marvel would have kept the title of the book more stable, it would have been a lot easier for fans to follow. It was challenging at times to let our comic shops know what we wanted to subscribe to. We wanted Spider-girl, but the name of the book kept changing.
The new Spider-girl, that isn't the same character at all, also caused confusion. I'd love to see the original Spider-girl come back some day, but either way, it was the most enjoyable series of books I ever had the pleasure to read.
