Discussion: Dollar Bin Awards 2011 Part 1

It’s that time of year again folks.  Its award season and we would be remiss to not cram another awards show down your throats, so we present to you the 5th annual Dollar Bin Awards… Part 1.  Why part one?  You’ll see.

Runtime 56 minutes 40 seconds

I think you guys should just call these awards The Dollies, make the award look like a big pair of boobs (Dolly Parton style) and then put Brian in charge of them. Everybody happy.

There's some pretty good nominees in the mix here, not that any of them won anything. I gotta admit I got a little sad when I heard Shaka say he didn't even know what a minicomic was. Hmmmm. I think it is a good move to start including webcomics in the criteria. Both Gabby Schulz's Sick and Emily Carroll's comics are among the best on the web. I would suggest also including reprint/archival/strip books as a category. This last year saw beautiful reprint volumes of Carl Barks' duck comics, Walt Kelly's Pogo and Roy Crane's Captain Easy but there's no place to mention them on the current ballot. Also, I would say the indie/creator owned/minicomic category should be split up. The description just covers too much ground if something published by Image and something made by someone in their bedroom fall in the same category. But anyhow, I look forward to the 2nd part.

Oh, also, I regret that my ballot was partially blank. I spilled a drink while voting and accidentally pressed the SEND button in the resulting melee. Aw well, I woulda just filled the blanks with dumb jokes and shit anyhow.

Dear god Henry, the show is already 3 hours long. How could you possibly ask more from us, jeeze. Shaka is new to the world of independents. We've all been there. At the DB Christmas party I gave out grab bags with mini comics in them, so I'll get everyone up to date. The Dolly's. I like it. The night I posted the show I scoured the Internet searching for an image of the AVN Awards to update with the DB logo, but couldn't find a good picture of it anywhere. I would love to split up the ndie/creator owned/minicomic category, but the problem is not enough people vote and those that do generally aren't familiar with books outside of Marvel and DC, so it confuses them. The category was initially intended to be simply minicomics. Maybe we need to do a specific DB Awards for the indie guys and gals. Maybe make it more of a, "hey, did you know this good shit was out there," show we do every year.

The last two show's have been interesting and funny as hell. I would have voted for Image as publisher of the year and will vote for Image in the future, I mean, have you seen the promo art for Bedlam? Steve Niles and Tony Harris on Chin Music? fuck yeah. That Image expo proved they will be getting my well deserved $'s this year.I gave DC a 6-7 issue shot and i have found I wanna read 2-3 dc books at the most. Prophet and Glory are cool as shit. Liefield cant draw shit, but damn, he came up with some decent rip-offs for his Image superhero line Extreme(and Deadpool's kinda cool).

I really enjoyed these awards, but I realized I have not read many of the books you guys are talking about. I have many things to start buying...

Which makes me think: Do you guys have an article up that is something along the lines of "comics you have got to be reading now." I would really appreciate some sort of listing like that, and I"m sure others would love to see one (or at least debate about what is on the list).

As always, thanks for keeping me entertained at work :-P

Thanks BG. They've been a lot of fun to record as well.

Andrew, we've thought about that in the past, but I guess its high time we actually executed. I'll see what I can get the guys to throw together and come up with a format. I can't promise to integrate it until we complete out site redesign which should be any week now, but there will definitely be a spot for it.
