Show 54: Super Hero Icons
Wednesday, August 29, 2007
What makes something an icon or a character iconic? Is it fame and notoriety or style and substance? Maybe it comes down to mainstream opportunities and longevity? No matter how you try to answer it makes for a good debate right? We thought so and battle it out on this edition of The Dollar Bin.

I think that was the point that I tried to make on the show. That no one ones who is behind the mask. There are all sortsa different types of recognition though:
Batman and __________ ?
Who is this picture of?
Who is Robin?
Name 5 super heroes.
These will all draw different results, but I think when you say name 5 superheroes pound for pond you will end up with the people on our list.
Man, Adam... What's it like to be so wrong? Let me know. Seriously.
Where it the FLAW in the logic Terry? Where is the Flaw??!?!
That's it we're putting together a DB mall poll. Who's willing to go to the mall and ask random people to name 5 superheroes? No one knows who Dick Grayson is!!!
Wow....
I think a poll would be great, but you need to ask more than just "Who is Dick Grayson?"
I think the questions in your above comment. Rotate through the questions and I think that would be fair. You could record it as well. Then you can do a Superhero Icons Redux show.
I'd say that at least seventy percent of the people willing recognize/know about Robin. I'm even willing to put a signed comic on table. Whaddaya say?
Okay, I've started a thread:

I don't think I'm going to take the challenge for the comic. I agree that about 70% will recognize who he is. What I don't agree with is that he would be in the top 5. After all he is a side kick.
You've got my curiosity peeked. Let the games begin.
Adam, http://forums.thedollarbin.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=57#p341" rel="nofollow">I apologize:
I surveyed a test group of 10 people at work and around (actually closer to 13, but I threw out the obvious comic/ex-comic geeks' answers as they tried too hard and ruined the spirit of the survey).
Not a single one of them (even extended to all 13) named Robin. That surprised the crap out of me.
Everyone named Superman, or course. The top 5 fell more or less predictably, although there were a few names I was surprised got as much play as they did.
Anyway, here's the tale of the tape:
1 Superman - 10
2 Batman - 6
3 Spider-Man - 6
4 Hulk - 4
5 Aquaman - 4
6 WonderWoman - 3
7 Cap America - 3
8 Green Lantern - 3
9 Flash - 2
10 Catwoman - 2
(I took Catwoman over Iron Man b/c Iron Man is enjoying a temporary boost in advertising and both people who answered with him acknowledged it was only b/c they couldn't escape his commercials at the moment).
And the rest, for posterity:
11 Iron Man - 2
12 Wolverine - 1
13 Thor - 1
14 Silver Surfer - 1
15 Atom - 1
16 Underdog - 1
