Dark Knight DVD Review

Originally released this year on July 18, The Dark Knight quickly rose to box-office heights dominating at the box office as the undisputed biggest movie event and top grossing film of 2008. Breaking at least two dozen box-office records it eventually settled into a comfortable spot as second-highest grossing movie (at least domestically) of all time. Now set to be re-released on January 23, 2009 the film will set-out to earn more than 1 billion dollars worldwide and gather some well deserved Oscar season buzz. But before all of that, the Bat-signal has shined upon all of us this holiday season with a highly anticipated DVD release especially given the holiday shopping season release.

Let me just say, all of the hype listed above is just window dressing to me. My personal reasons for looking forward to owning this film on DVD is because it is the best Batman movie ever, the best comic book movie ever, and the best movie of any kind I saw in 2008. I don’t think I am alone with those feelings as Apple has recently announced that on the presales alone, The Dark Knight is the biggest selling movie for 2008 on I-Tunes. But enough about how awesome the actually film is (and how we can never be friends if you didn’t really enjoy it) and let’s take a look at what the DVD release is going to have to offer consumers.

Brian Reviews Punisher: War Zone

Punisher: War Zone Movie PosterLet me begin this review by saying that I am not a Punisher fan or a reader of Punisher comics. I’ve just never had that much interest in Frank Castle or who he’s blowing away every month. If you were kind enough to listen to our Dollar Bin Theatre show about the last Punisher movie, you might also remember that I didn’t hate it. I know many fans of the character loathe that movie, but I don’t hold quite the same view. To me that movie wasn’t great but was enjoyable for 3 reasons: the first is I like Tom Jane, secondly I liked the guy with the guitar and third it starred one of the greatest performers of our time … Kevin Nash

Iron Man DVD Review

Iron Man DVD Cover ArtThe second biggest movie of 2008 and the 21st biggest box-office money maker ever finally hit DVD last week and it hit hard. Iron Man was a huge blockbuster for Marvel Films and it is obvious from all of the various DVD releases on the market they are hoping to make the same sort of splash on the home entertainment market as well. You would assume that just based on the box-office for the film, great DVD sales would be a given. It would seem Paramount and Marvel doesn’t want to risk such an assumption as they are flooding the market with a ton of different “special” editions of the film or more accurately its packaging upon its release.

HBO Says No to Preacher

Preacher by Garth Ennis & Steve DillonAccording to recent articles on Newsarama and Comics Continuum, fans no longer have to dread or look forward to a Preacher TV series on HBO.

Mark Steven Johnson, who brought us such comic book movie “classics” as Daredevil and Ghost Rider, wrote the pilot and was set to serve as an executive producer for the series that has been in development since November of 2006. According to Johnson, HBO execs felt the series direction was going to be “too dark, too violent and too controversial” for their liking and was very faithful to the DC/Vertigo series from creators Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. “It was a very faithful adaptation of the first few books, nearly word for word,” says Johnson, “They offered me the chance to redevelop it but I refused. I’ve learned my lesson on that front and I won’t do it again. So I’m afraid it’s dead at HBO.”

The idea for the TV series with HBO came about after several attempts to package it as a feature film fell thru. Even as it seems that idea has failed as well, Johnson was quoted in saying a possible movie or even movie series could still be in the works. And who knows…with the current popularity of comic book movies and the way The Dark Knight has ruled the box office this year perhaps Warner Brothers themselves will get involved. But for now Preacher can be labeled as yet another DC property stuck in developmental limbo and let the debate continue to rage if that is a good thing or bad thing for fans.
