Shawn Says: Spotlight on New Releases Catch Up!
In which Shawn lets you know which New Releases she’s been reading these past couple weeks!
Issue #12 begins the third storyline for Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt’s critically acclaimed series, The Sixth Gun. This book just keeps getting better and better! My only complaint is this it doesn’t come out fast enough. There is a lot of action in this issue. We get to see Missy Hume and boy is she creepy. We are also introduced to a new villain. If you haven’t started reading this book than this issue is a perfect jumping on point. Or you could go back and read it from the beginning. The first two trades are out and ready for purchase!
2) Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #6
I really hope that what I think is going to happen does in fact happen. And I hope that we will see the effects in the larger Marvel Universe. Avengers: The Children’s Crusade has been a very enjoyable book. Jim Cheung’s art is beautiful and Allan Heinberg’s story is enthralling. There is a lot going on in this book and I really want it to matter outside this mini-series. I think it would take away a lot of the emotional weight of the story if it didn’t ripple out into continuity. If you don’t like the story then the artwork alone is worth the price of admission. The action scenes and splash pages are phenomenal.
3) Flashpoint: The Canterbury Cricket #1
I had to buy this book just because of how ridiculous it looked. I have no idea who the Canterbury Cricket is. I don’t even know if he is a pre-existing character or if they just made him up for Flashpoint. And, after reading the book, I still don’t know. This is the only Flashpoint book that I have read so I will a little confused about what was going on, but I pieced things together quickly. The Amazons have invaded England for some reason. In comes the Canterbury Cricket to the rescue. I didn’t just buy this book for the silly premise. I also bought it because Rags Morales did the art. So I knew if the story was stupid at least it would look pretty. I admit I did enjoy it. I like the Canterbury Tales feel to it. If you are reading and enjoying Flashpoint it will be worth your while to pick this up and check it out.
4) Ozma of Oz #8
Ozma of Oz has a perfect ending. The last panel made me melt. You don’t have a heart if it doesn’t make you tear up a little. I love Eric Shanower’s writing on the Oz books. He captures the characters wonderfully. His writing is clean and crisp and fresh. Mix that with Skottie Young’s vibrant and emotional art and you get a perfect match. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz. September can’t get here fast enough!
5) Fear Itself #4
I’ve been enjoying Fear Itself. It is a fun summer blockbuster comic. I guess what happened in issue #3 really did happen. Though it is comics, and not real life, so it can be undone. I really like the layouts and pacing of this issue. Stuart Immonen and Matt Fraction work great together. The action sequences with Iron Man, Thor and Steve Rogers are great. I loved getting to see them team up and fight bad guys. Though I’m not sure I like where they are taking Iron Man. Looks like issue #5 is going to be a big fight! Cool!
6) American Vampire #16
I love this book! I can’t recommend it enough. I love the mix of historical and supernatural elements. Scott Snyder is a great writer. I have yet to be disappointed by him. Rafael Albuquerque is the perfect artist for this book. His art is frantic and gestural. If you only read one vampire book make it this one.
7) Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers #8
And now for something completely different. You all know my feelings about Boom! and Disney and cartoons and puppets and Muppets. Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers is a lighthearted, fun read. I like to mix in bright and cheery comics with my dark and depressing comics. This one always puts me in good spirits. If you liked the cartoon you will most definitely like the comic.
8) Gotham City Sirens #24
I like how they are ending this series and breaking up the Gotham City Sirens. I am going to miss reading this book (especially Guillem March’s covers). It was cheesy and silly but it was a fun read. I wonder what they are going to do in the last two issues though and what that will mean for the DC relaunch. Catwoman is getting her own book, Ivy will be in Birds of Prey and Harley will be in Suicide Squad. But I wonder how they will get there from here. I will enjoy this book while I can.
